My name is Glyn MacDonald and I have been a tutor on Jazz Camp for 2 years and the coordinator for the camp since 2005. I have seen some of the great outcomes from the camp. After the hugely successful Easter Jazz Camp held in 2004 at Scotch College, followed by 2 years at Mount Lawley Senior High School and then Churchlands Senior High School, The West Australian Academy of Performing Arts has kindly agreed to be our hosts for the next jazz camp, to be held from Monday July 14th to Thursday July 17th 2008.

As with last year, the camp will bring together young musicians from across the state (and further a field) for a 4-day workshop program with professional jazz musicians, including instrument Master classes, ensemble workshops, big band workshops, improvisation classes and daily concerts. The camp culminates in a concert by the students for parents and friends.

The
camp syllabus is directed at attaining the following outcomes for students:

  • An understanding of the history of their instrument and the jazz tradition
  • An understanding of the essential elements of jazz performance, being "blues and swing"
  • An understanding of the conventions of jazz, including terminology and practical performance conventions
  • An understanding of "Latin" and straight 8ths music, particularly in relation to the jazz tradition
  • An increase in the student's repertoire of jazz tunes
  • A greater understanding of performing in both small ensemble and big band
  • To learn from and perform along side some of Perth's best jazz musicians

  • All of our tutors for
Jazz Camp 2008 have degrees in either performance or education or in some cases both. They have all won awards, performed overseas, recorded albums and each has a detailed understanding of providing jazz education to all levels of ability.

Although our expectations were high last year, the response to the camp from all involved was beyond what we could have hoped for, and the final concert was an incredible and very memorable occasion.

    Principal tutors for
Jazz Camp 2008 will be: Russel Holmes (piano), Carl Mackey (saxes), Mat Jodrel (trumpet), Bill McAllister (trombone), Peter Jeavons (acoustic/electric bass), Freddy Grigson (guitar), Andrew Fisenden (drums), Libby Hammer (vocals) and Glyn MacDonald (piano/coordinator). Tutors may change subject to availability. The camp will also include guest tutoring and performances from some of our many fine WA jazz musicians.

    The fee for this years
Jazz Camp is $300 plus GST ($330 inclusive), which we hope you will consider to be great value for money for the quality of tuition and the development of year-round activities. This fee includes world-class tuition, music, daily lunchtime concerts by visiting groups and a professional final concert featuring the students.

Demand for places has been at a premium in previous years and only 60 places are available for students at this year's jazz camp. The last 4 years have seen a steady increase in interest and this year, like last year, will sell out fast!

    To secure
your spot at Jazz Camp this year, simply fill-out the online form. Applications close Monday 7th July or when all places have been filled.

We all look forward to seeing you there!

    Yours sincerely,

    Glyn MacDonald
