As with last year, the camp will bring together young musicians from across the state (and further
a field) for a 4-day workshop program with
professional jazz musicians, including instrument
Master classes, ensemble workshops, big band workshops, improvisation classes and
daily concerts. The camp culminates in a concert by the students for parents and friends.
The camp syllabus is directed at attaining the following outcomes for students:
An understanding of the history of their instrument and the jazz tradition
An understanding of the essential elements of jazz performance, being "blues and swing"
An understanding of the conventions of jazz, including terminology and practical performance conventions
An understanding of "Latin" and straight 8ths music, particularly in relation to the jazz tradition
An increase in the student's repertoire of jazz tunes
A greater understanding of performing in both small ensemble and big band
To learn from and perform along side some of Perth's best jazz musicians
All of our tutors for Jazz Camp 2009 are experienced teachers and acclaimed performers in their own right. They bring a range of experience from performing at major events on a national and international stage as well as recording albums and providing jazz education to all levels of ability.
Principal tutors for Jazz Camp 2009 will be:
Russel Holmes (piano),
James Sandon (saxophone),
Marty Pervan (trumpet),
Bill McAllister (trombone),
Peter Jeavons (acoustic/electric bass),
Tim Jago (guitar),
Ric Eastman (drums), and
Libby Hammer (vocals). Tutors may change subject to
availability. The camp will also include guest tutoring and performances from some of our many fine WA
jazz musicians.
The fee for this years Jazz Camp is
$330 including GST, which includes world-class tuition, daily lunchtime concerts by visiting groups and a professional final concert featuring the students.
Demand for places is always at a premium and only 60 places are available for students at this year's jazz camp.
