BACKLASH Jazz Quintet High quality, energetic music in a style accessible to both the general public, and regular followers of jazz. The music is therefore up-beat, funky, and showcases the talent of the band's musicians. The group consists of some of Perth's best musicians including Ben Hodgkin Trumpet, Daniel Hart Sax, Joe Whittle Drums, Mat Willis Bass and Glyn MacDonald piano.SPUR Jazz Funk Quartet Spur was formed in 1991 as collaboration between Graham Wood and Carl Mackey. The goal was to produce a high energy blend of Jazz, Latin and Funk that was rare in the Perth music scene at the time. The outcome was very successful with Spur debuting to a packed house at the Perth Jazz Society in 1991.Spur are Graham Wood Keys, Carl Mackey Saxs, Ric Eastman Drums, Roy Martinez Bass.SALAMANDER 7 piece Original Soul, Jazz, Hip Hop Group Bringing together the virtuosity and freedom of jazz with the attitude and production of hip-hop and dance music, Salamander showcases the excitement that can be generated when the best of acoustic and electronic are combined. Salamander was named 'the most outstanding group of 2003' by The Perth Jazz Society and it's debut album 'Adapt' was listed by 3D Magazine as one of the top thirty albums of 2003. The group continues to remain active in and around Perth and has plans for a second album in the pipeline. Multiple horn melodies are syncopated and layered on top of a percussion section producing energetic funk, rock, latin and hip-hop grooves. The band combines traditional"old skool" brass jazz standards with contemporary hip-hop and funk arrangements. Improvised horn solos, gravelly call and response vocals, soulful harmonies and frenetic extended percussion jams are all included in the funky mix.BRONWYNN WAY QUINTET Vocal swing jazz at its best Vocalist Bronwynn began her musical career, gaining a scholarship to Perth Modern School on Oboe, in 1987. She then began playing Electric Bass with the Kalamunda Youth Swing Band, in 1989. Bronwynn eventually took front stage with this band in 1991, when the singer at the time, was unable to make a performance. Bronwynn has never looked back!!! The group features some of the swinginist players in Perth including Sam Anning Bass, Michael Perkins Drums, Glyn MacDonald Piano and Mark Gravoski Saxophone. The Bronwynn Way Quintet will be featured at the Perth International Arts Festival 06 on the "Becs Verandah". Consisting of Sam Anning (Bass), Michael Perkins (Drums) and Glyn MacDonald (Piano) the Glyn MacDonald Trio draw influence from diverse ends of the musical spectrum. From Classical through to Latin, and coupled with a knack for infectious toe-tappin' swing, their collective works rest comfortably on a bed of groove-oriented originality.Hip Mo Toast Quintet Swingin Vocal Jazz Since their formation in early 1996, Hip Mo' Toast has played in restaurants, hotels and concert venues all over Perth. Led by jazz vocalist Libby Hammer, the group has proved to be Perth's most sought-after jazz band, whether as a quintet or the awesome 14-piece big band. Hip Mo' Toast has wowed audiences at jazz clubs and lounges such as the Perth Jazz Society, Greenwich, the Fly By Night Musicians' Club and Jazz Fremantle. Hip Mo' Toast has featured at festivals such as the Fremantle International Jazz Festival, the South Perth Fiesta, Geraldton Seajazz Spectacular, Araluen Botanical Gardens, Swan Festival Club, and the famous York Jazz Festival.Freddy Poncin Cuban/Salsa Percussion Master Born in Amsterdam Freddy's talent was recognized at a young age by his mother and he started learning congas at the age of 12. Freddy was honoured to study with Raoul Burnet who was regarded as the best conga player and teacher in Western Europe. Raoul was a master instructor in Latin Percussion and lecturer at the Amsterdam Conservatorium, an expert in Afro Cuban rhythms and played with music legends such as Patato Valdez, Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaria, Wilson Picket, Art Blakey and many more.Ray Walker Trio Drumless Trio of Seasoned Improvisers RWT is a quality trio of guitar, vibraphone and double bass. Without drums it is a low volume ensemble requiring only a small space for both set-up and performance.The trio performs an arranged repertoire of accessible standards and originals in a swing and latin idiom and enjoy improvising in a "baroque" style that exudes musicality. RWT performed with WASO at their first major concert at Sandalford Winery. Ray Walker has long been regarded as WA's premier jazz guitarist. He has performed with the WA Symphony Orchestra since the 1960s on numerous occasions and in recent years guested with the Malaysian SO.Mike Pigneguy Sextet Original Mainstream Jazz "This group burns from the first note to the last.
